但依然离不开寻觅的主题，雪漠老师也在试图还原历史的真相，如马在波寻找木鱼令、木鱼妹寻找机会复仇、驼队寻找罗刹等，表现出了一个轮回的巨大幻象。
书中的“磨坊”就是传达苦难的象征。雪漠老师说，“在西部，很多诡异的事情都发生在磨坊里面。磨盘的磙子叫青龙，也有称作白虎的，磙子是白虎的一种象征。白虎星是不吉祥的，它像无数的岁月一样把很多东西碾碎了，把许多诗意破坏了，作为苦难的磨盘和作为救赎的木鱼之间其实只有一念之差，就是一个字“爱”。
